Police said sedition charges have been filed against the 15 people who were shouting pro-Pakistan slogans after the India lost the contest in the Champions Trophy finals.
Madhya Pradesh police in Burhanpur district have arrested 15 Muslims and filed sedition charges against them for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in the finals of the Champions Trophy.
Police said the sedition charges were level against the accused for shouting pro-pakistan and anti-India slogans and are to be produced before the courts today. The incident occurred in Mohad, of Burhanpur district in Madya Pradesh.
A top police official claimed that the charges were invoked not for supporting a particular side during the cricket game but because pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans were raised.
“Some people in Mohad village raised slogans in favour of Pakistan and also burst crackers on Sunday night after Pakistan defeated India in the finals of the Champions Trophy,” Sanjay Pathak, officer in-charge of Shahpur police station, told IANS.
The complainant said that crackers were being burst close to homes of people belonging to the majority community. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case and detained the youngsters aged between 19-35 under section 124A (sedition) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code on Monday evening.
